"How do I cite my sources?"

Most of Newton North High School uses the MLA form of citation.* You can consult your orange writing handbook for a simple explanation. Or you can click here for a brief MLA style guide. Citations come in two forms:

Parenthetical Citations: Unless your teacher instructs you otherwise, in the body of your paper or letter you need to add a brief citation in parentheses when quoting or using ideas from sources. See "Choosing When to Give Credit".

Bibliography or "Works Cited": Your bibliography will include the full citation in the specified form. See "Format for Citing Your Sources".

Here are some time-savers that make buiding a bibliography easier:

BibmeBibme will actually find the information about what you are trying to cite and automatically fills in the blanks! When it can't find the information you need, there is a short form to fill out to manually cite the source. Its free!

Easybib helps you create citations in MLA format (6th or 7th edition) with easy-to-use forms that lead you step by step through the process. You can save your 'Works Cited' list to update later, or export the finished file in Word format.

Citing Articles and Books from the Digital Library: If you are using something from the "Digital Library" (see the menu above), there's a good chance the citation is provided somewhere (usually at the bottom) on the page.  Questia, Britannica, Gale, SIRS, WorldBook, and Marshall Cavendish all provide citations.  All you need to do is copy-and-paste!

worldcatThe world's largest library catalog will help you create citations. When you find your book or article, click on "cite this item", and then its just a matter of copy-and-paste!
